Kaito Kuroba

Miles' first meeting with Kaito, although he was and still is unaware to this day, was when the teenager dressed up as Kay Faraday and went around making fun of everybody in Johto by confusing the hell out of them. That was back in October, and shortly after Miles' first conversation with a certain phantom thief that shares an identity with the teenage boy that Miles had somehow come to genuinely like and respect.

It's sometimes hard for Miles to be completely open to show how he feels. It's easiest with Ken, with whom it's sometimes like looking in a mirror, and it's also not that difficult with Heather... however, with Kaito it's a little different.

Ken and Heather both understand the pain of having a murdered parent, just like Kaito. Ken and Heather both loved those parents dearly, just like Kaito. However, what sets Kaito (and Kay, for that matter) apart from those two is Miles' knowledge that Kaito revered Touichi Kuroba and aspired to follow in that father's footsteps - even now. There's a little bit of envy and a whole lot of admiration and respect working here whenever Miles looks to this side of Kaito Kuroba.

On the other hand, Kaito is cheerful and enthusiastic and it's often that Miles finds himself being teased by the guy. Back when they first started this interaction, there were a few times that Miles suspected Kaito to be doing this just because Miles was a kid and it was some kind of teenager rule to make fun of kids. The jokebook on Christmas, the constant attempts to make Miles laugh... it took awhile before he came to truly appreciate Kaito's attempts to keep a ten-year-old child acting as a ten-year-old child should.

It actually took becoming an older brother (by going home and meeting the little Franziska von Karma, and then meeting the teenage one in Johto) for Miles to realize how important it really is for people to know how to be happy, especially before they come adults. It's been since this realization that Miles really does try his best to answer to Kaito's attempts. And since then, he feels that he's been able to become much closer to the magician than he was before.

Before, Miles knew Kaito primarily as Kay's friend, an acquaintance of Phoenix's, a friend of Heather's, who he met at around the same time as Kaito. Now, Kaito is one of the people Miles trusts the most in Johto... a close friend, an older person he could rely on, someone who understands and doesn't look down on Miles, but also someone who he can genuinely enjoy himself around.

Apart from Hershel Layton who is the only one to know the exact circumstances of Gregory's death, and Ken, Kaito (and Kid) knows Miles the best, especially regarding the dark side of his past, and in a strange world where trusting is getting harder and harder, Kaito has Miles' unwavering trust.

It's not exactly a brotherly thing. It's not exactly - or nearly - the same as the bond he shares with Ken. But despite the age and their two different paths (as one follows his father and one is constantly doubting his own), Kaito is one of Miles' most important and trusted friends.
