[The screen flickers on to show a sunny blue sky framed by the branches of trees. On occasion a bird or two or a flock of them fly past, but there is no sign of the boy who owns the Pokégear. In the corner of the screen, something orange flits in and out of view before there is the sound of panting and bounding feet, followed by--]

Ugh. [--the sound of someone groaning, as if something heavy had been dropped on his stomach. The screen turns blurry, as if the Pokégear was being shaken around. The sound of struggling and excited barks could be heard.] Stop, you silly dog, stop, you can't use this-- this contraption as a toy! .....No, you can't chew on my bowtie either but-- ugh, fine you can lick my face. [There is a soft sigh as the screen stops moving. It moves again as the happy-looking face of a young Growlithe comes into view, then, finally the camera swerves again to show the slightly disgruntled, slobber-covered face of a young boy lying on the grass. So that's where he was!]

.....My name is Miles Edgeworth. [The boy seems absolutely squicked out - apparently he's never talked to electronics before. The Growlithe, on the other hand, looks nothing less than deliriously happy as it sits by the boy's head and smiles up at the camera.] I woke up... this morning and found myself in a house that wasn't mine, with a woman that wasn't my mother -- and then I got kicked out. I'm not sure how this happened, or what will happen from now on, but... [Miles averts his eyes momentarily, then turns his head as if staring at the sky and the trees, glancing at the Growlithe before turning back to the camera.] I think the best choice I could make now is to keep moving along down the road. Perhaps I'll meet someone who can give me some hints on.. what's going on. -- ugh. Stop that! [There is a beep, as if Miles had pressed a button, and the screen goes blank, but not before it catches the Growlithe finding a small butterfly on Miles' shirt and pouncing at it.]

[And Phoenix is WORRYING INCESSANTLY about this poor kid, seriously. He really hopes he can find a way to explain things to him once he gets to Cherrygrove...if only to try and make the guy cheer up. Soemhow. He's still trying to figure out exactly how this confrontation is going to WORK, really. OTL.]

So she says. She knows Larry, too. And most of the people from my time...as well as Apollo, and a prosecutor named Gavin.

[--and WHOA A LEGITIMATE QUESTION THAT HE CAN ACTUALLY ANSWER. Phoenix is pleased.]

Yeah, you can. In your bag, there should be these...round, red-and-white balls. You can throw them at the wild Pokemon to catch them. You'll need to weaken the wild ones a bit by fighting them first, though... _{Don't worry about hurting them -- it seems bad, but they don't seem to mind.}

[Poor, poor Phoenix. Miles isn't so worked up about meeting his older!best friend and finding out Phoenix's "dark secrets" and what he seems reluctant to talk about. He'd just found out from Apollo that Phoenix became a defense attorney. He is intrigued by this information and wonders if this "one of the best" lawyer is anything like his father -- not to compare the two too much, of course. Just a mild curiosity ~~he is also quite lonely~~ ]

A prosecutor.. [!!! That reminds him-- ]

Mr. Apollo seemed to recognize my name after a while, and he mentioned something about a prosecutor.. Wright, do you know anything?

[Wait, so he could've caught those three Pokémon that seemed to have lost consciousness after one of Pess's jumping-everything-that-moves sessions? He should have asked earlier!]

.....Hm. I'll think about it, then.

[Phoenix doesn't know that Miles knows of his profession -- he's certainly not going to bring the matter up until Cherrygrove, at the least -- and, well. At that first comment, he...gets this expression on his face that's incredibly melancholic. A kind of weary sadness, but he blinks and covers it up with a serious expression before it can stay on his face for long.]

...in my future, you...become a great attorney. [Which isn't a lie. "Demon Prosecutor" aside, no one can deny that Miles has a lot of talent.]

Well, Pidgeys are pretty helpful. [CHANGE OF SUBJECT YAY--] They can fly, so they can see a lot more of the route ahead than you can. _{They can get berries out of high trees, too.}

[Miles doesn't feel really up to the "SO how was your life" story either. He would wait. For now he must get to the next town and get some rest. The weather can change at any time, after all.]

...........I see. [Well, there's another thing he probably should ask someone other than Phoenix about. An attorney-- a prosecutor? It sounded... interesting, at the very least.]

PIdgeys ... Oh, the birds. Like... the ones that Pess keep chasing.

[He can't stop the little sigh of relief as Miles drops the subject. Not territory he wants to read into at the moment.]

Yeah. The little brown and cream colored ones, right? There's also a dark brown bird that comes out at night...I think they're called Hoothoots.

Well, after you and half the world warning me to stay in a secluded place at night, I think I should opt for the Pidgeys.

I think Pidge would be happy to have a friend.

[Affirmative caw in the background is affirmative.]

......The last time I checked a Pidgey was smaller than that.

Please don't say that these creatures magically mutate.

[Catching on now, Miles, aren't you?]

That's...pretty accurate, actually. It's called "evolving." [Pidge caws in affirmation and preens Phoenix's spikey head affectionately.] Pidge here evolved a little while ago, before we left Violet.

[Miles suddenly turns to his Growlithe with apprehensive curiosity.]

Do you think she'll evolve, too?

OH. Oh, those. They're...elemental stones. They can make certain Pokemon evolve. There's the fire stone, leaf stone, water stone, thunder stone...and I think there's one more, but I don't remember it's name. _{Something to do with the moon.}

...I think Growlithes evolve using one, actually.

That's what it says in the book. [Miles looks intrigued by this fire stone. At his mentioning said stone, Pess seems to have become even more cheerful and excited (if that's possible), and she can be seen darting in and out of the screen in the background, barking.]

The Trainer's Handbook, right? I guess it does... [He watches Pess, a bit amused.] I think they sell the stones in the Pokemart, but I'm not sure how much they cost.

...Pess. You're going to get hungry again and I'm not giving you any more trail mix until Mr. Apollo and I get enough money to buy other food.

[Pess whines and crawls under Miles' blanket, sulking. Sighing, Miles turns back to the camera.]

I don't know.. I'd rather her level up a bit more as a Growlithe before she evolves, but. It's not as if I have money to spare..
