He can easily act pleasant and calm to Clover. Or to anyone else. They come and go, exchange some words, and he doesn't really worry if they care or not. He's upset and tired and he can say so, and that builds up a conversation.
But it's different with Heather. He feels himself scowling because he doesn't want her to worry (though it's nice that she cares). He doesn't want to make her worry, doesn't want her to express her worry. Because he cares, and he worries that she, like all the people he met when he first arrived in Johto, and all the people he knows back home, would go away. Disappear or leave, and he hates how that upsets him even more. ]
