KEN AMADA | Persona 3
I'm happier than I've been in a long time. In two years.

Ken is actually one of if not the most confusing thing in Miles' life.

Miles is the most awkward when it comes to being anything other than strangers with people, and it takes a lot of thinking and effort for him to keep his grasp on this friendship... or at least that's how he feels. Miles' first and last friendship with Phoenix and Larry ended abruptly when Miles was thrown into an orphanage then taken in by von Karma. It ended badly and Miles knows that his refusal to get back in touch with them following his move was his selfish act of trying to forget the days before DL6, and a kind of betrayal to his old friends. He doesn't think he deserves anything like that ever again, but he really wants to keep the close friendship he's come to establish with Ken.

He wants to keep it more than anything right now, but as I've said earlier he's bad with people. It doesn't seem like it, he knows how to deal with people - what to say, how to set his expression as not to give away anything, not to judge them immediately and act like he sees people for who they want to be seen as - but genuinely caring about keeping a relationship, wanting them to like him and fearing the day this might all end so much that he doubts everything he says and does and wishing to be the best friend he can be for that friend-- it's completely unfamiliar and strange. It breaks Miles' style, and a break in his style insinuates an inner turmoil that has a tendency to slowly but steadily build up before exploding.

Canonically, it happens to Prosecutor Edgeworth. After Phoenix breaks up the von Karmic style he'd grown used to for a good part of twenty years, Damon Gant knocks over the Jenga Tower and Edgeworth was backed up into a figurative corner, pushed to the limit, and as a result Edgeworth "chose death." Edgeworth treasured his old friendship with Phoenix, broke it with his own hands, and then Phoenix returned to tear him apart, but Edgeworth still cherished that friendship (so much that at first he rejected this returned old friend.)

Just being from the time of life he's in, and being in Johto, has got Miles in a sad state of confusion. Life before DL6, life in Johto, his friendship with Ken, the months back with the von Karmas, then the months following. Miles has no idea what he's doing anymore, who he's supposed to be or who he wants to be, and in the midst of all of this he's still got growing friendships with people like Kisa, and then some burning and screaming want to stay Ken's best friend -- how fair is that? To himself, to the father he promised justice to, and to this person who's voiced more than just a few times that he wants to be with Miles?

It makes Miles want to run away from everything again. If he deliberately stayed far away from Ken, so far they'd be no way for them to reach other, he wouldn't have to live  knowing that one day, there would have to be a parting they might not even expect. At the same time even the thought of that breaks his eleven year old heart and it's the last thing he wants, to be separated from his best friend. Miles hates to know it, it would take a lot to make him ever say it, but he acknowledges to himself that he's become dependent on Ken's presence. He doesn't need his friend's shoulder to cry on; he appreciates but doesn't desire for Ken to risk anything to protect him. However, it's no secret that Ken being nearby and being his friend makes Miles feel less lonely and more safe - that habit of clinging to Ken's sleeve took a vacation shortly following Miles' coma, but it's come back full force since and it's gotten more desperate since they arrived in Olivine. Ken's never allowed to leave him, and honestly? Miles would never leave Ken's side, either.

And despite all of Miles' desire for Ken not to risk anything to protect him, Miles would drop anything and destroy himself, his body, his life, or anything to make sure Ken is safe and alive. But he'll also do everything to stay alive and functioning because.. that's the promise. His promise is to stay besides Ken, not protect him and possibly leave him alone like everything else back in Iwatodai had for Ken Amada. Without a doubt, Ken is still and forever Miles' best friend, and someone Miles trusts with his life.

HEATHER MASON | Silent Hill 3
But you don't need to pretend that it's not a big deal.

Heather has somehow become a very important figure in Miles' life. He honestly didn't think much of her at first beyond her being another of Phoenix's teenage girl acquaintances and didn't think he would do more than greet her out of politeness and recognition when they met. Now, Heather is a very close friend and Miles trusts her as much as he can trust a person. That isn't to say Miles is unwilling to trust people; but after his father's death, meeting adults who claim to be his best friends from fourth grade as well as others who acted nice but continued warning him against each other, trusting becomes hard. It's impossible to prove, no matter how much he likes them, that Phoenix or Larry are who they said they are, and they've already kept enough secrets from Miles. It was proven to him already, during the DL6 trial, that without evidence, there really is no power behind a person's words.

But Heather had been blunt and raw and real to Miles since the very start. The fact that she's also gone through the same loss as him makes him look to her even more. Miles knows that, ultimately, he'll be okay even if he was completely on his own, but what he really appreciates is the existence of someone who gets him, to understand his situation and encourage him and lead him and to just be the family that he lost too early and desperately wants back. Heather is someone who's done that, and she means a lot to Miles. If someone were to hurt Heather he would do anything he could to help her and get back at them.

LARRY BUTZ | Ace Attorney
But even after all that, we're still best buds. All of us

Miles first met Larry as fellow students in the same fourth grade class, both of them rising to defend another boy who had been wrongly accused of theft and had been put on "trial" by their classmates. Though their personalities are completely different - Miles, serious and almost uptight, Larry carefree and almost flaky - that incident brought them and the third of their trio, Phoenix, to become close friends. However when Miles moved away from Los Angeles following the DL6 Incident, he didn't expect to meet Larry again upon being transported to Johto - let alone a Larry that's seventeen years older than his old classmate!

The sudden age gap and the awareness of Larry's knowledge regarding Gregory's murder and Miles' future had made interacting with him awkward at first, but after seven months and after Miles had resolved to "live for the now" and not worry too much about Prosecutor Edgeworth, Larry is definitely still the good friend Miles had in fourth grade, and someone he feels comfortable talking to freely - it's okay to joke with Larry, and it's okay to talk seriously with him, too... and yell at him, from time to time, like when Larry was acting like a complete ungentleman about the way he treated his past girlfriend.

KISA SOHMA | Fruits Basket
I don't think... listening to someone is ever... a burden.

Kisa being good friends with Ken is what initially drew Miles to her, but since meeting her and talking to her personally, he himself has come to like her very much. They spent their first conversation together talking about their mutual fondness of Ken Amada; not only two weeks later, upon learning about Miles' birthday she sent him a gift. Ever since Miles returned to Goldenrod after his and Ken's week in the Ilex Forest they've spoken often, gone shopping and conspired for Ken's birthday together, and overall have gotten much closer. Kisa is also another person who knows about the Persona abilities of the people from Iwatodai. Before her Miles has only spoken to Mitsuru in passing about the S.E.E.S. members' ability, and to hear that word leave her mouth came with a wave of relief.

Miles is not the type to seek comfort from others, and especially not from someone his age. Though he isn't afraid to show when he is upset, it's a part of his nature to insist that he is fine and stay standing on his own two feet. Kisa has become a close friend over the last three months, but she is probably the last person Miles would talk to about the DL6 Incident or his situation with his world. She's a person who radiates a quiet, sincere kindness and innocence that Miles - like Ken - feels an incessant desire to protect.

LUKE TRITON | Professor Layton
Perhaps you two will meet again?

Friendships have a trend of coming in big blasts for Miles. His relationship with Phoenix and Larry was launched by a single incident in their fourth grade year, and his friendship with Ken but farthest from gradual. They start quickly, intensify, and last for a long time. It's a little different, though, with Luke - their friendship is like those of two good gentlemen, tipping their hats at each other on the street in greeting, enjoying the occasional afternoon tea on a refreshing day after a storm… perhaps if Gregory Edgeworth and Hershel Layton met, that's what their relationship would be like, as well.

Luke and Miles interact most to share their opinions on the going-ons in Johto; whether it be disappearing people, comatose companions, or young Pokémon, the two of them have often discussed them and shared their ideas. Both of them are fairly intelligent for their age and are alike in that they both have an intellectual gentleman for their role model; Miles doesn't speak about Gregory to Luke much, but the topic of Layton's greatness would probably be one they can talk about for hours. Miles thinks Luke is a nice person and enjoys speaking to him!

FUU HOUOUJI | Magic Knight Rayearth
Is there a reason you are so willing to trust me?

In the world there are many wise people, and Fuu Hououji is undoubtedly one of them. Miles first acquainted with Fuu during her earlier stay in Johto; he lost touch with her after she returned home, but when she appeared in New Bark Town once more he did not hesitate to contact her. She didn't have memories from the last time she was here, but he doesn't mind having to reacquaint with her at all.

It was back in February when the accidentally bumped into each other in Violet following Miles' fight with his best friend; Fuu, whose glasses Miles had rescued from her angry Mareep, had insisted on thanking him and the two went out to buy Miles some hot chocolate. There, Miles told Fuu about his fight with Ken, and it was then that Fuu told him the story of her world - he later realized that she had a habit of telling a lot about herself. Fuu's words to Miles then ( "He might not care for the world. But he does care for you, does he not?" "Do not let anyone tell you how your future will play out. This story is yours.") had a powerful impact, and he's been - a little subconsciously - living with those words close at heart. Although she doesn't remember, Miles will always be grateful for the guidance she gave him that day, and if she does not mind he wants to talk to her more, and it probably won't be the last time he turns to her with pressing questions.

SOUJI SETA | Persona 4
Well, it's a good thing I don't quite believe in jinxes then.

So far the two of them have gone through a few (sometimes mis-)adventures together, such as getting Miles mistaken for a girl, Souji shoving him onto some swings, and Souji teaching Miles how to play soccer so Miles could get better at the sport for his friend Ken. They also happen to share a birthday together, and they're both quiet and slightly introverted people.

Miles liked hearing about Souji from the latter's cousin, Nanako, and he likes speaking to him now. Whenever Nanako spoke of her "Big Bro," it was always with a tone of pride and great love for her older cousin Souji, and after meeting and speaking to him a few times, Miles thinks he can understand why. Souji is not the loud, fiery figure Heather is; he isn't the charismatic performer Kaito is; however Souji has his own charm in the way he radiates assuredness and calmness. They aren't yet the closest of friends, but through Nanako and Souji's natural ability to draw people to him Miles has slowly been getting comfortable around this fellow grey-haired boy.

MITSURU KIRIJO | Persona  3
I assume you wish to remain at his side?

Mitsuru Kirijo is a friend and teammate of Ken, as well as the woman who took care of him up until the two boys began traveling together. Miles was introduced to her through his friend at the end of December, and the two have spoken several times since then. He thinks she is a reliable and strong person and enjoys speaking to her, especially since they have a friend in common and both of them have a Plusle that likes to cause them and their friends mischief. Not only that, Mitsuru was the first person Miles met who came from a family similar to the von Karma family he lives with now. "Opposites attract" is a popular saying, but it is in fact the similarities between Miles and Mitsuru that has made into friends.

Cool and intelligent, Mitsuru is someone Miles respects, and he'd like to speak to her more often (without feeling like muttering unsurely in the face of her strong confidence) and get to know her better.

PHANTOM THIEF KID | Detective Conan/Magic Kaito
A phantom thief must be charming, after all.

Criminals are not an existence Miles does not come across often. As Gregory Edgeworth's enthusiastic son and as Manfred von Karma's dutiful student, Miles has heard of and seen a number of them in his life. However it is only in Johto that Miles has had a chance to speak with them - among them, there was Phantom Thief Kid. Ironically enough, Kid was the first one to hear Miles' doubts about his world, and it was on Kid's advice that Miles pressed Phoenix Wright and Dick Gumshoe to tell him about the truth of the DL6 Incident (even though in the end, Miles couldn't bring himself to completely believe them).

Miles' opinion of him is an odd one. While like with Shelley de Killer he can hold a feeling of respect for this man's ideas, Kid is a criminal and Miles is to become an attorney; thus being friends with the man is an idea Miles cannot wrap his mind around. "One day, I will catch you," is something the young boy will tell the thief with a tiny smile.

HAL EMMERICH aka OTACON | Metal Gear Solid
Even if he doesn't think he's worth anything...I always will.

Hal Emmerich stands on the borderline between acquaintance and friend. He's nice enough, if not extremely friendly, and he's another person who has uncertainties about his relationship with his world and the people there. If Miles wants to change the future he's been told about, Hal is someone who wants to warn a friend of his future - though unlike Miles who is still childishly naïve despite all his maturity, Hal's darkened wisdom as an adult makes him more reluctant fiddle with fate lest he doom his world. They're similar but different, and Miles has occasionally felt both frustration towards the indecisive scientist as well as hesitation - maybe Hal is right?

Despite these differences and little uncertainties planted because of them, Miles enjoys speaking to Hal. They have had pleasant conversations about this or that (discussing their fathers, for example) and adventures escaping violent exploding insects together. They aren't friends in the way Miles is with Ken and Kisa or Heather and Kaito, but Otacon is an adult Miles can hold respect for and enjoy talking to.

AKIHIKO SANADA | Persona 3
Ken needs more friends.

There are a lot of eyebrows you can raise about a person who starts his first network post reading and learning about Pokémon, and then ends his next one by punching a bird in the sternum. Long before they first spoke to each other, Ken told his best friend about the high schooler from Iwatodai he looked up to most; and stories about Akihiko put in juxtaposition to stories about Shinjiro Aragaki created an interesting contrast. That was back in December.

Over the last five months, Akihiko in Miles' mind was the sparkling, awesome and powerful person Ken spoke proudly of, and while the human imagination adds unnecessary and inaccurate accessories to reality, Miles wasn't disappointed when he finally met Akihiko - even if he didn't exactly approve of the violent way the boxer reacted to his Pidgey. He's a respectable friend of Ken's, and Miles doesn't mind talking to him! He just hopes Akihiko doesn't starve on every route he walks on…

SHINJIRO ARAGAKI | Persona 3
Could've been worse though.

When Miles first heard the name of "Shinjiro Aragaki," it was from a Ken Amada who had yet to experience the man's death, and it was when Miles' then-new friend explained to him how and why Mrs. Amada had met her end. Since then Miles has watched his best friend fall into a coma to return distraught over not being able to prevent Shinjiro's death, watched Ken try to drown himself in icy January oceans, and had been the one to drag that Ken to shore and help nurse him back to health. During all of this the two boys stuck together, and as a result Miles had seen the past two Shinjiros' reaction - or lack thereof - to the obvious distress Ken has been experiencing ever since his mother's death and especially since Shinjiro died in Iwatodai two years later on the same day. There had been times Miles wanted to grab Shinjiro and tell him to be straight with Ken; there had been times when Miles wanted to grab Ken and hope he could forget it all. As another child who lost his father to murder and might be - he's been told so but he's not sure - living with said murderer as an adoptive son, and as a best friend, Ken's smile, safety, and happiness is what Miles wishes for more than anything. Shinjiro was someone who upsets Ken. Miles did not appreciate that.

When this third Shinjiro appeared he was different. There was something.. kinder about him, and a definite willingness to look Ken in the eyes and talk to him. And Miles has finally had a chance to personally talk to Shinjiro as well, and he's come to re-realize that there's much more to Shinjiro Aragaki than just what he knows about October fourth. Shinjiro's well-suppressed but still apparent fondness of Akihiko and - could he be mistaken? - genuine concern and care for Ken lets Miles relax, at last, around the man and start trying to trust Shinjiro.

SHELLY DE KILLER aka MR. DOE | Ace Attorney
Life can take many surprising twists... Miles.

Gregory Edgeworth taught that the most important thing is trust. Manfred von Karma taught that all criminals must be punished. A student of these two foils, Miles has a very confused view of men like Shelley de Killer and his own relationship with people like him. He can't exactly rely on what his teachers have taught him, so he's learning to make judgments based on what he's been told, what he's seen, and what his feelings tell him. Easy enough, perhaps, for someone who wasn't an already emotionally confused eleven-year-old boy. What he knows is that criminals like Shelley de Killer must one day meet their punishment, and if the man were ever to attempt assassination of a person in front of Miles, he would do anything to see justice served.

However as aforementioned, Miles Edgeworth is still a young boy. A young, confused boy who is re-learning his own definition of right and wrong, justice and injustice, what to trust and what to absolutely stay away from. The von Karma tutelage scores into him the stifling mindset to view things from one side only: if a man is suspicious, he is therefore a weed that must be plucked from the garden; a von Karma must hold no doubts, and any blot on the white canvas must be deleted out to leave perfection. Gregory Edgeworth's philosophy, as well Miles' own ability to view everything calmly from all sides conflicts greatly with such a method. As a result, Miles is torn between his different views of this man named Shelley de Killer - a criminal who must be punished, or a man who, though he would never admit to caring, rushed to Miles and Ken's side when he thought the former fell down the Slowpoke Well?

It disgusts one part of Miles to be able to feel companionship for a man who confessed to being a mercenary. It absolutely disgusts him, as if he is fraternizing with the "enemy." At the same time, though, another part of Miles sees Shelley de Killer as being just an awkward old man who is just as much a gentleman as Gregory and Professor Layton… and he trusts Shelley de Killer. He enjoys the man's company. It would be a lie if Miles said that a part of his reason to want to stay in Johto wasn't because he does not want to grow up to be the prosecutor who must one day hunt down the man he's come to like as a child.

CANON (out of game)

GREGORY EDGEWORTH | Ace Attorney Investigations

A successful lawyer, gentleman, and warm father - Gregory Edgeworth was, and still is, the greatest influence in his son's life. He was a busy man, often staying out well past nine o'clock in the evening to investigate his clients' cases, leaving young Miles to take care of himself at home. To say those nights weren't lonely would be a lie, but Miles took pride in this wonderful father of his and viewed Gregory as his goal and role model - "I'm going to be just like father." There was an utmost faith in his father and everything he stood for, which was what made up the foundation of Miles Edgeworth's confidence and belief system until the DL6 Incident.

Miles is by no means an unfaithful person. The DL6 Incident turned his life upside down and shattered his trust in the justice system he so believed in, and Miles Edgeworth was left with solitude, phobias that left him in tears or knocked unconscious, not a single idea what to do with himself from no one and absolutely no one to turn to (until von Karma appeared). However, this does no mean that Miles lost faith in even his father. In fact, Gregory is almost a holy icon in the boy's life, in some ways. The boy feels that he no longer deserves to walk the same path as Gregory, and because of this his past dream is no longer obtainable. But Gregory is still the amazing lawyer Miles knew him as, and a father he loves more than anything in his life - an irreplaceable existence in the boy's still-short life.

FRANZISKA VON KARMA | Ace Attorney
... however, I suppose that it is not terrible as gifts go.

She's entitled and confident and sometimes nasty, but she is not at all a bad person and Franziska von Karma is a sister Miles is fond of. They aren't related by blood; Franziska is the second daughter of Manfred von Karma, whom Miles was adopted and taken in by following his own father's death in 2001. When they first met in Germany Miles was ten years old and Franziska three, and in the nine months he spent with her before his return to Johto, the little girl had grown on him. Upon returning to Johto he met her there as a teenager and their relationship hit off on a rocky start - not only had Franziska grown up to be just like her father, perfectionist and elitist, she'd also upset Miles' best friend. It took about a month before the two were able to settle their obvious differences and reach a compromise.

After their agreement not to speak ill of either Ken or von Karma, their relationship has gotten easier. They spent Valentine's Day afternoon together and Franziska accepted the gifts Miles sent her. She still berates him for his "imperfect" ways and the obvious influence of her father worries him at times, and Miles worried more about their relationship if von Karma really is his father's murderer. Even more than revenge or justice, what Miles seeks most (even if he isn't completely aware of it) is a family. As Franziska is just that, Miles sincerely wants to get along with her in Johto and at home. He hopes that they might be able to sit next to each other and just enjoy each other's presence one day.

MANFRED VON KARMA | Ace Attorney Investigations

Gregory Edgeworth's trial against Prosecutor Manfred von Karma lasted a year, and Miles met the man first on December twenty-eighth on the last day of the IS7 trial. That very same day, Miles' father was murdered, and Miles forgot about their encounter from the shock of the incident. The next time von Karma appeared before the orphaned Edgeworth, it was to take him away from Los Angeles and to Germany, as Miles' new guardian. Perhaps it was because Gregory wasn't one to talk ill about others, no matter who they were - even Manfred (although, ironically, upon their first meeting Gregory thought of Manfred as "the last person I'd want as my son's teacher") - but Miles does not know the details of the dispute between his two fathers.

However that does not mean Miles was completely unexposed to the tales of ruthless von Karma. Coming to Johto he met Phoenix Wright and Dick Gumshoe, two people who, after a few weeks of pressing and questions, told the boy about Manfred von Karma's role in the DL6 Incident as well as the rest of Miles' life. Needless to say, such a tale shook him up. When Miles returned to his world during a coma and met with the von Karma family, he was apprehensive and worried… but he found himself respecting this man.

The DL6 Incident and its verdict had taught Miles that any claim without tangible, undeniable evidence is meaningless. Phoenix's claims that he is Phoenix Wright, the claims that Manfred von Karma is the man who murdered Gregory. They aren't statements Miles can give much credit to, and what he himself saw during his time in Germany was a successful prosecutor with a loving family - a wife he took good care of and a daughter who respected him greatly - and a philosophy he followed faithfully. Miles doesn't exactly agree with von Karma's ideas on perfection. It isn't something he seeks or needs; but it is von Karma's assuredness about himself, much like Gregory's assuredness, that draws Miles to this man. In addition, von Karma was the person who took one young boy who lost everything and took him in, offering him a place to stay, clothes to wear, food to eat and perhaps one of the best educations a child could ever hope for. For this hospitality, Miles would always be grateful.

DAHLIA HAWTHORNE | Ace Attorney
As long as he believed everything I told him, no one could touch me.

Unlike her sister Iris who was sweet through and through, Dahlia Hawthorne is a bright red apple that is pleasing to look at, but is in fact rotten to the core. Ever since her first appearance in Johto, Miles had been warned against her, how dangerous she is - and then he'd been forced to watch helplessly from Violet the video as she poisoned Phoenix Wright in an attempt on his life. Though he finds all crimes to be detestable, murder is one that he absolutely will never forgive someone for committing or even attempting - for Dahlia he feels contempt, a rage that runs much deeper than an offense to his sense of justice or his protectiveness of a person he'd come to see as a friend. What Miles Edgeworth saw on October seventeenth as Phoenix collapsed to the ground and coughed up blood, as Dahlia gave a small giggle and waltzed off from the scene, was proof that - as it had been with the perpetrator of the DL6 Incident - criminals would do anything to get away with their crimes… "As long as he believed… no one could touch me," Dahlia had told him.

However, there is a part of Miles who cannot bring himself to treat her with the same hatred and anger he showed to the unknown killer of Gregory Edgeworth. Sister Iris had once described Dahlia as someone who was hurt in the past and knew no better, someone who should be… pitied. Miles isn't sure he's swayed by such words, but while he will never forgive Dahlia for her attempt on Phoenix Wright's life, he can't shake off the feeling that if Dahlia Hawthorne herself were to fall into any danger, Miles would try to help her…
